Somatic Cell Counts of Cows with Recurrent Cases of Clinical Mastitis

چکیده

Introduction Mastitis continues to be the most frequent and costly disease of dairy cattle. Financial losses due to mastitis occur for both subclinical and clinical stages of the disease. Losses caused by subclinical mastitis are well documented. Each doubling of SCC above 50,000 cells/ml results in a loss of 0.4 kg and 0.6 kg of milk per day in first lactation and older cows, respectively (Hortet and Seegers, 1998). Losses caused by clinical mastitis include discarded milk, transient reductions in milk yield and premature culling (Fetrow, 2000). Perceived financial losses for clinical mastitis vary widely. In 2002-2003, farmers participating in milk quality programs in Wisconsin (n = 117) estimated that each clinical case of mastitis cost approximately $97.00 USD, but estimates ranged from zero to $260 per case. Discarded milk accounted for more than half of the cost ($54.00 USD).

The effect of subclinical mastitis on milk composition in dairy cows

Milk samples were collected from quarters of 35 cows with subclinical mastitis (California mastitis test [CMT] positive and somatic cell counts [SCC] >500,000 cells/ml in individual quarter foremilk), as well as from 37 healthy controls. Compared to the levels observed in milk from healthy quarters, milk from quarters with subclinical mastitis showed elevated sodium (91.97 vs 52.93 mg/dl), chlo...

Study of the relationship between oxidative stress and subclinical mastitis in dairy cattle

Subclinical mastitis is considered as one of the most prevalent diseases in dairy cows, causing drasticloss in the dairy industry. Oxidative stress, induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS), is believed to be aprimary factor in various cattle diseases including mastitis, but there are few studies regarding the role ofROS in subclinical mastitis. This study was undertaken to i) study the changes...

اثر دو روش تدریجی و ناگهانی خشک‌کردن بر شاخص‌های بیانگر سلامت پستان در گاوهای با دوره خشکی کوتاه

This study was conducted to determine the influence of two intermittent (1wk) and abrupt drying off methods on udder health index of dairy cows with 30d dry period. Eighteen multiparous dairy cows were dried off approximately 4 wk prior to the expected calving time in a completely randomized design. For intermittent milk cessation treatment, cows were dried off in the following manner. Milk sam...

Spatial patterns of recorded mastitis incidence and somatic cell counts in Swedish dairy cows: implications for surveillance.

Clinical mastitis (CM) is the most common veterinary treated disease in Swedish dairy cattle. To investigate if the distribution of veterinary registered cases of CM in Sweden follows that of the spatial distribution of cows with high somatic cell counts (SCCs), the spatial distribution of CM odds was estimated from available records and compared with udder health measures based on measurements...
